On Tuesday 26 June 2018, in the Tanger Automotive City Free Zone (TAC), the Italian car part manufacturer Magneti Marelli launched construction work on its first specialised factory for the production of shock absorbers to be used in cars and utility vehicles. Covering an area of around 20,000 m², the investment agreement for this industrial unit was signed in September 2017 in Rabat. In the long term, it will entail a 405 million Dirhams (MDH) investment and will lead to the creation of 500 direct jobs.

The factory should start production in 2019 and will have an annual capacity of 6 million pieces. The project aims to support Magneti Marelli clients located in Morocco and the south of Europe (Spain, Italy, and Turkey).

For the occasion, the Minister Moulay Hafid Elalamy, praised the arrival of a world leader in car part manufacturing in Morocco. He emphasised “that with this industrial project, a new business area is developing in Morocco and the national automotive industry is becoming even more integrated. The work of Magneti Marelli will also benefit the local landscape of suppliers that the Tangier factory will use for its supplies in shock absorber rods and machining. ”

For his part, CEO of Magneti Marelli, Pietro Gorlier, indicated that the group had chosen to place its confidence in reliable partners like the Special Tangier-Mediterranean Agency (TMSA) and the Tanger Automotive City, which through their dynamism demonstrate their abilities in terms of local business development and the incredible potential of the country in the financial and automotive sectors.

President of TMSAs supervisory board, Fouad Brini stated that it was important to be there for the construction of the first factory. She revealed how the Tanger Automotive City (TAC), which was empty three years ago and is almost full today, proves the momentum present in Morocco and the country’s ability to complete big projects “in record time”.
