The Chinese group Dongfeng Yangtse is set to build an assembly factory for the latest generation of buses and other electric vehicles in Tangier, Morocco. Over one billion MAD has been set aside for the investment.
The CDG of Dongfeng Yangtse, Mr. Wu Tian Cai, made the announcement to the Moroccan press on July 21, 2016
Construction work on the factory is set to begin very soon and it should be operational by 2017. Once up and running, the goal is to reach an annual production of between 200 and 300 electric buses. The factory will also create 2000 long-term jobs.
According to Wu Tian Cai, the choice of Tangier and Morocco is down to its strategic position, which gives the company access to both European and African markets. The decision was helped by the high quality infrastructure and skilled labour force available. To begin with the directors of the Dongfeng Yangtse group hope that through the factory they will be able to respond to local market needs before going on to conquer the wider African market.
