After the French groups Renault and Peugeot, BYD Auto Industry is the 3rd car manufacturer to set up shop in Morocco thanks to its decision to create a factory for electronic cars near Tangier. A memorandum of understanding has been signed at the Royal Palace in Casablanca between the King Mohammed VI and Wang Chuanfu, CEO of BYD. The memorandum anticipates the construction of a battery factory, an electric tourism vehicle factory, an electric bus and lorry factory as well as a factory for monorail train carriages. These factories will be located near Tangier, in the future “Mohammed VI Tangier Tech City,” an “industrial city” created by the Chinese group Haite. The production sites will cover 50 hectares and will allow the creation of 2,500 direct jobs. By creating a Green mobility ecosystem, for the first time in Africa, Morocco is creating a production centre for electric vehicles”, stated Moulay Hafid Elalamy the Minister for Industry, Investment, Trade and the Digital Economy.
